Under Fort Baker Pier

Low tide at sunset reveals the hidden forests of kelp under Fort Baker Pier near the Golden Gate Bridge in Sausalito. Like it’s counterpart across the bay, the Fort Point Pier, this pier offers not only decent fishing but one of the worlds most beautiful views. Look up to your right and you are looking up into the Golden Gate Bridge. Look across the bay and you see The City. Look at the bay and you will see Angel Island, Alcatrez, and an unending number of boats, everything from the smallest sailboats to large luxury liners and even larger oil tankers. It is hard to fish this pier and not recognize that San Francisco Bay is one of the world’s greatest bays. Of course there are many days when you can see nothing but fog moving in through the Golden Gate, fog which seems to pierce even the heaviest coats but which also at times seems to lend a surreal feeling to the whole area.

Lime Point Lighthouse

When the Golden Gate Bridge was completed in 1937, a fog horn and light were placed at the base of the bridge’s south tower, making the Fort Point Light unnecessary. However, Lime Point Lighthouse was located next to the base of the north tower, and remained an effective position for a light and fog horn. Lime Point was automated by the United States Coast Guard in 1961, and the three-story dwelling and other buildings were torn down, leaving only the fog signal building.

Reach Across

Across San Francisco in Marin County lies Fort Baker Pier in Sausalito, with an epic view of the Golden Gate Bridge. Battery Lit 2

Battery Spencer is perched on a bluff top of the Marin Headlands, about eye-level with the top of the north tower of the Golden Gate Bridge. Back during the early 1900’s, Battery Spencer was one of the main protection points for the San Francisco harbor. It featured multiple 12” guns that were manned by the military and a few buildings for housing the generators and shells. It was operated on and off until World War II when a lot of it was scrapped for war efforts.

Top of the Cove

No beach in the world has a view like Kirby Cove. From its sandy shore just west of the north side of the Golden Gate Bridge, look east to a stunning panorama of the city. The steep, mile-long trail to the cove begins at the parking area above Battery Spencer on Conzelman Road—eye-level with the bridge’s towers—and descends through a grove of cypress, eucalyptus, and pine.

King of the Fog

Salesforce Tower, formerly known as the Transbay Tower, is a 1,070-foot office skyscraper in the South of Market district of downtown San Francisco. It is located at 415 Mission Street between First and Fremont Streets, next to the Transbay Transit Center site. Salesforce Tower is the centerpiece of the San Francisco Transbay redevelopment plan. The plan contains a mix of office, transportation, retail, and residential uses. Upon its completion in 2018 it became the tallest skyscraper in the San Francisco skyline, with a top roof height of 970 feet and overall height of 1,070 feet, surpassing the 853 feet Transamerica Pyramid.
